The chief
aim of cooperation has always been "to protect or increase quality,
sustain vitality, and ensure access to a broad and diverse curriculum."*
Cooperation in the academic sphere is no exception. The forms are varied,
ranging from two Five College Departments, interdisciplinary programs
and certificates to Five College centers and standing committees or councils
that work to coordinate the curriculum in some disciplines. Each has been
shaped by groups of faculty who regard cooperation as a vehicle for enhancing
or sustaining the offerings in a field or discipline.
