Seminar Guidelines

Guidelines
for New Groups and Requests for Renewed Funding
NEW GROUPS:
The broad purpose of the faculty seminars is to bring faculty from
all five campuses together to exchange ideas, read works-in-progress,
and on occasion to host a guest speaker. Their formats vary with the needs
and interests of each group as does the frequency of meetings. Seminars
are funded for the academic year on a year to year basis.
To be eligible
for funding as a Five College seminar, the group should include members
from all five colleges, but three-and four-college seminars are possible.
- Guest
speakers should constitute an occasional rather than regular feature.
- Seminar
funds may not be used to cover the cost of meals for members but may
pay for meals of guest speakers (including five college faculty) and
for light refreshments at meetings.
Applications
must be made in writing and are due in the Five College office on or before
March 1. (A small reserve of late-starter funds is available for those
who submit a request after this deadline.)
Include
the following information in the letter of application:
- Name
of Seminar
- Name(s)
and phone number(s) of the person(s) responsible for administering the
seminar.
- Description
of the organization and purpose of the seminar.
- Number
of meetings anticipated and a list of faculty who have agreed to participate.
- A budget
of projected expenditures for activities proposed (i.e., costs for duplication
and notices, expenses for speakers, and meeting refreshments).
Proposals
should be clearly labeled and addressed to "Faculty Seminar Program,"
attention of Nate Therien,
Five College Center for delivery through inter-campus mail Via Messenger
Service, or for hand-delivery to 97 Spring Street, Amherst, MA 01002.
For further information call: (413) 256-8316.
RENEWED
FUNDING:
I. Applications for renewed funding for an existing seminar should:
- Identify
the seminar and the person(s) responsible for it, with address(es) and
phone number(s).
- Describe
the general organization and purpose of the seminar and its continuing
value to members.
- List
activities and expenditures in the current academic year, including
those planned for the spring, as well as average meeting attendance.
- Outline
plans for the coming academic year.
- Provide
a budget for anticipated activities and expenses (i.e. costs of duplicating
notices and papers; expenses of speakers; refreshments for meetings--since
meeting space is readily available at the members' campuses, as a general
rule, no provision is made for room-rental fees).
- List
names of those members who regularly (rather than occasionally) attend.
II. Seminar
chairs are reminded of the general guidelines governing all activities
and expenditures:
- To be
funded by Five Colleges, Incorporated, a seminar should include members
from all five colleges, but four-or even three-college seminars may
be eligible.
- To retain
the emphasis on members' research, speakers from outside the Valley
generally constitute an occasional rather than regular feature of the
seminar.
- Seminar
funds may not be used to cover the cost of meals for member participants;
however, they may pay for meals of guest speakers (including five college
faculty) and for light refreshments at meetings.
Letters
requesting renewal should be clearly labeled "Faculty Seminar Program,"
attention of Nate Therien,
Five College Center for delivery through inter-campus mail Via Messenger
Service, or for hand-delivery to 97 Spring Street, Amherst, MA 01002.
For further information call: (413) 256-8316.
