The Five College/Public School Partnership promotes collaborations between K-12 and college faculty as a means to serve the needs of public school districts in western Massachusetts and to encourage exchange on matters of teaching and research. The Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS) promotes the teaching of East Asia by supporting the work of educators throughout the New England region. The Five College America Reads Program promotes literacy through the use of student tutors who earn workstudy while assisting young people with their reading skills. Faculty members and professional staff engaged with community based learning (CBL) have been meeting for several years to share information and coordinate their efforts at carrying out research in area communities. More information about current activities is available from Nate Therien. Also, there is a related UMass Amherst-based Web site in place that lists community service links http://www.comcol.umass.edu/csl/. Historic Deerfield, Incorporated maintains twelve museum houses and its director of academic programs is available for consultation on matters of teaching and research. The Five College Learning In Retirement Program constitutes an autonomous organization devoted to programming that serves the needs and interests of retirees of the area.
