Direct Borrowing
The direct borrowing agreement among the Ūve libraries allows students, faculty and staff to borrow materials from all main libraries and some branch libraries. Borrowing in person may be done on presentation of a valid ID, or by placing an online request through the Five College Library System, which provides intercampus delivery of books.

Five College faculty* may borrow from a collection of well over 1,500 films and videos at the Harold Johnson Library Center at Hampshire. A catalog of the collection is available at the main libraries. No rental fee is charged. There are basic ground rules for film-borrowing (no advertising, no admission charges) and faculty members are requested to take questions to, and place orders with, the appropriate office on their own campus:

Amherst: Robert Frost Library, AV 542-2149
Hampshire: Johnson Library, 559-5538
Mount Holyoke: Dwight Hall, 538-2793
Smith: Non-print Resource Center, 585-2954
University: Goodell, 545-2454

Responsibilities and restrictions

  • All borrowing is subject to the rules of the lending institution.
  • Materials borrowed from another library may be returned through the borrower’s home institution. The circulation staff may designate speciŪc locations for such returns.
  • Borrowers are expected to respect due dates and to respond to all notices. Failure to receive a notice does not necessarily relieve the borrower of responsibility.
  • Libraries will assess fees for repair or replacement of damaged or lost materials. Bills will be issued through the borrower’s home institution and will include a nonrefundable billing fee.
  • Borrowers not complying in full with library policies will be subject to administrative sanctions at their home institution and may be denied further loans.

*Note: As a general rule, only faculty may borrow from the institutional collections.
