photo of Gillig BusThe Pioneer Valley Transit Authority (PVTA) is pleased to announce the arrival and deployment of 30 new buses to its fixed route fleet. being operated by First Transit Inc. and UMass Transit Services. In addition, 13 new converted vans have also been added to its paratransit fleet. The new vehicles cost a total of $8.4 million with 80% being paid for by the Federal Transit Administration through a congressional earmark of $6.4 million secured by Congressman John Olver and 20% being paid for by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Executive Office of Transportation.

The new buses include 10 30-foot buses which serve 23 passengers, 10 35-foot buses which serve 32 passengers and 10 40-foot buses which serve 40 passengers as well as 13 converted vans.

These transit buses were manufactured by the Gillig Corporation in Hayward, CA. They include passenger amenities such as a low floor, accessible ramp, high visibility destination signs and kneeling capabilities. The converted vans were manufactured by Shepard Brothers in New York.

Sandra E. Sheehan, PVTA Director of Procurement and Transit stated, "The variety of bus sizes provides for a more efficient operating fleet with improvements in passenger convenience and fuel use."

"Many residents are dependant upon accessible transportation to get to educational centers, health and social services and most importantly, jobs. These new buses will play a vital role in strengthening our transportation infrastructure which is incredibly valuable to the economic health and prosperity in the region," said Congressman John Olver.

UMass Transit will operate five of the new Gillig buses, which are painted in PVTA’s new color scheme and logo. The 40-foot Gillig buses (pictured) will be alternated on route 31 North Amherst/Belchertown Road, route 31, Sunderland/South Amherst, and route 38 UMass/Mount Holyoke.
