Five
College Counselor Colloquy and Campus Tours
October 26-28, 2005
Presented by Five Colleges, Incorporated and the Five Colleges:
Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College,
University of Massachusetts Amherst
What
is the Five College Counselor Colloquy?
Every other year, we invite a group of counselors from different regions
of the country to visit our campuses for two or three days, spending time
with our students and faculty, with admission staff, and with each other.
Through these visits, counselors gain a clear idea of the very distinct
personality of each member college and see how our ground-breaking consortium
serves each college community and forms a larger shared community. The
colloquy also creates a setting in which individual relationships can
form and grow.
Here’s
what past participants have had to say about their experience with the
tour:
“A
cost-effective and dramatic way to get to know five campuses.”
“This was great. Coming such a long way, seeing the schools was
most important to me.”
“I
really enjoyed meeting counselors from all over the USA and sharing
ideas. Thank you so much for the great experience.”
What
about the program?
The visit includes part of a day spent at each campus, where you can sit
in classrooms, tour labs and theater spaces, and spend time in conversation
with faculty and students. We also build in free time for you to explore
the towns in which our schools reside and encourage you to make your way
using the fare-free buses that link our campuses day and night.

What
are the costs?
Counselors are here as the guests of the Five Colleges for lodging and
all meals. Free ground transportation from the local airport (Bradley
International Airport, Hartford, Connecticut), from bus and train stations
in Springfield is also furnished, as is ground transportation from campus
to campus during the visit. Counselors are responsible for paying their
own round-trip travel and for incidental costs when on their own in town.
What
about Five College Opportunities?
The Five Colleges were among the first group of schools to introduce the
concept of the joint campus tour for counselors. In a sense, it came naturally
to us because we already associate as members of one of the oldest and
most succesful consortia in American higher education, Five Colleges,
Incorporated. Through the consortium, we offer students enrolled in any
of our schools a number of Five College opportunities to enrich and expand
their educational, cultural, and social experiences:
- open
cross registration: taking classes at any of the schools, free of charge
and for credit
- open
borrowing: a Five College database of holdings gives students and faculty
easy access, both electronically and in person, to five distinguished
libraries with a combined collection in excess of nine million volumes
- a Five
College online course catalog
- opportunities
to study with 2,000 faculty in the five colleges combined
- Five
College Departments of Astronomy and Dance and a range of Five College
Programs
- Open
auditions for theater
- Opportunities
to perform in a Five College Choral Festival, World Music Festival
