On June 22-24, 2009, the Five College Intergroup Dialogue Training Institute kicks off its dialogue facilitation training for 60 faculty and staff from Smith College, Amherst College, Mount Holyoke College, Hampshire College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Twelve participants have been selected from each campus to participate in this training initiative. The Institute is the result of a partnership between the Five College Training and Development Collaborative, the Five College Diversity Directors and Dr. Ximena Zuniga and several doctoral students and alums from the Social Justice Education Program of the School of Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The Institute will convene at Amherst College and will teach staff and faculty from the Five Colleges the basic skills of dialogue facilitation. Participants will learn how to co-facilitate two-hour dialogues across a range of diversity related topics. The long-term goal of this initiative is to create a group of facilitators across the Five College network who can lead dialogues on various topics of interest and concern. On October 27, 2009, a Day of Dialogue will be launched on each of the five campuses to address the topics of race, class, gender, and religion. These topics were chosen by surveying the training participants and by assessing the current and emerging issues on each of the campuses. Staff and faculty will be invited to attend.
