Five College Jazz Festival offers something for everyone

A cappella and orchestras, trumpets and electric guitars, students and seasoned professionals; the First Annual Five College Jazz Festival on February 23, 2008 promises to offer an array of music for all listeners. The all-day event takes place in the Student Union Ballroom of the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Boasting performances by a dozen bands of some 200 performers from each of the Five Colleges, the Jazz Festival will culminate in a performance by the jazz faculty of the consortium. Admission is free and the public is welcome. Listeners are expected to come and go throughout the event, which begins at 9:30 Saturday morning and concludes at 4:30 in the afternoon. The Jazz Festival is sponsored by Five Colleges, Inc. and the Five College Music Chairs.

At 7 p.m. on February 23, 2008, the Liberty Big Band takes the ballroom stage. The ensemble, part of the renowned United States Air Force Band of Liberty, presents top-flight, big band jazz ranging from Count Basie and Duke Ellington to Matt Catingub and Rob McConnell. Admission is free and open to the public.

Free parking for both events is available in several locations, including lots 63, 25 and 32 of the UMass campus; and fee parking is available in the Campus Center parking garage. Click here to view the University campus map page.
