Call for Applications and Nominations Deadline for Nominations extended: February 10, 2012 The Five College Deans invite nominations (including self-nominations) for the position of Director of the Mellon-funded Five College Digital Humanities Initiative. The purpose of this five-year initiative is to encourage development and use of digital technology in support of teaching and learning in the humanities and student-faculty scholarship in the humanities. In collaboration with a faculty steering committee appointed by the Deans, the Director will encourage, recruit, select, nurture, support, and celebrate projects proposed by mixed teams of faculty members and information technologists at the five institutions. Fundable activities include: establishment of learning communities; course and resource development; summer workshops (here in the Valley or at other locations) to develop technical and content expertise and to further particular projects; residencies and postdoctoral fellowships; graduate assistantships in support of faculty development projects involving digital technology; student-focused skills workshops and projects showcasing student scholarship employing digital technology. Nominees or applicants for the position of Director must be tenured faculty members (or equivalent) at one of the five institutions (at Hampshire, regular faculty members in ten-year contracts). Demonstrated interest in humanities teaching and scholarship with links to digital humanities and familiarity with digital technology applications, as well as some administrative experience, are expected. The Director will report to the Five College Director for Academic Programs, Nate Therien. The Digital Humanities Director will work from a Digital Humanities Program Office on one of the campuses and will be provided administrative support through Five Colleges. To discuss this opportunity, please contact Nate Therien. The term of the initial appointment of a Director will be 4-5 semesters, beginning July 1, 2012 and continuing through December 2013 or May 2014. Since the Five College Digital Humanities Initiative will continue through December 2015, the Deans will re-open the application/nomination process in the last semester of the inaugural Director’s term; reappointment to the position for the balance of the grant-funded period is a possibility. The Director is expected to devote 10-15 hours per week during the academic year to this project and will be granted a course release each semester of service--the grant includes funding for replacement of these courses. In addition, the Director will receive a supplementary stipend for work half-time during the summer. Nominations should be submitted by email to: sharrison@fivecolleges (subject line: Director, Digital Humanities Initiative) by February 10, 2012. Page created 10/27/11; modified 11/11/11 Home
