Five Colleges Appoints New Communications Director

Five Colleges, Incorporated has announced the appointment of Kevin Kennedy as its Director of Communications and Publications. He succeeds Carol L. Angus, who retires at the end of June, after serving for 23 years as the first public information officer for the consortium.

Kennedy, who has been associated with Marlboro College in Vermont for the past fourteen years, has extensive experience in higher education marketing, writing and editing, and in strategic planning for the College’s two-campus structure.  At Five Colleges, he will assume responsibility for all its publications and for its Web site and, as a member of the senior staff of the consortium, will be assigned to meet with several standing committees currently engaged in some form of cooperation, including the Museums10 group, the Five College Admission officers, and several groups in student affairs.

A 1984 graduate of Holy Cross College in Worcester, Kennedy has been promoted several times during his years at Marlboro College and on some occasions served in dual positions. Most recently, as Marketing Director he has had oversight of marketing planning for the college’s graduate and undergraduate programs and in this capacity also supervised public relations and development for the school’s new MBA in Managing for Sustainability. During the past two years, he served at the president’s request as Compliance Coordinator, directing the College’s response to sexual harassment complaints.

Kennedy began his professional career as a news editor with Vermont Business Magazine in Burlington and later as editor of the Vermont Environmental Monitor in Brattleboro.  He joined the staff of Marlboro College in 1993 as director of publications, responsible for the college’s major undergraduate admissions publications and the college magazine. For three years, while director of publications, he also served as Student Life Advisor, to supervise resident assistants and provide emergency medical aid and mental health assistance to students after business hours. In 2000, Kennedy was promoted to Communications Director at the College, where for a period of six years he created and managed Marlboro’s relations with print and electronic media outlets to advance its admissions efforts. In that position, he also worked to support marketing for the Marlboro College Graduate Center.

Throughout his professional life, Kennedy has been active in community service, both for the college and for communities in which he has resided.  From 1993 to the present, he has served the Town Meeting at Marlboro College in a variety of elected positions from meeting moderator to selectperson and community court justice as well as on campus committees.  He was appointed several times by the president of Marlboro College to serve as staff representative to the Sexual Harassment Panel and was instrumental in helping to develop policies to govern staff performance review. Currently, he serves on the Brattleboro Literary Festival Committee and with the Marlboro School Association.

Kennedy will assume duties with Five Colleges on June 25, 2007.
