Museums Group Launches New Name, Logo, and Major Cultural Tourism Initiative for 2006

On Friday, April 1, at 10:00 a.m. the Eric Carle Museum will play host to the launching of a unique collaboration among ten local museums whose goal is to raise awareness of their collections and to promote the Pioneer Valley as a destination for cultural tourism. The newly named Museums10 includes the Eric Carle Museum, the National Yiddish Book Center, Historic Deerfield, and seven other museums sited on Hampshire County’s five college campuses (see over). Those expected to be on hand for the festive kickoff include state and local officials, area chamber and visitors bureau representatives, program participants, and members of the media, all of whom will be treated to the official unveiling of the Museums10 logo, the announcement of a major grant to the project from the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC), and plans for a region-wide cultural tourism initiative, GoDutch!, slated for spring 2006. Speakers will include Representative Ellen Story of Amherst, Chancellor John V. Lombardi of the University of Massachusetts, and Meri Jenkins of the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

For over three years, the directors of the museums affiliated with the five colleges (Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst) have been meeting monthly to discuss common issues and ideas for collaboration and cross-promotion. Recognizing what they call “the power of 10,” the group has already been successful in attracting the attention of travel and arts writers, and has produced a promotional brochure that is distributed throughout the region. This past year, the directors got their marketing staff involved and the rest, as they say, is history.

In addition to ramping up the group’s existing collaborative efforts, the marketing directors led efforts to carve out a new identity and plan of action for the group. The result is a new name, a new look, a new grant, and a compelling project on which to hang their hat. Next spring and summer, Museums10 will embark on its first thematic undertaking, GoDutch!, a region-wide celebration of Dutch art and culture anchored by the Eric Carle Museum’s exhibition Dutch Treats: Contemporary Illustration from the Netherlands (March 25 - July 9, 2006), and open to cultural organizations throughout Hampden, Hampshire, and Franklin counties. GoDutch! has to date received the enthusiastic support of local chambers of commerce and the Greater Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau, who view it as a chance for culture and commerce to partner and to benefit the Pioneer Valley as a whole.
