Lorna Peterson receives lifetime achievement award for work at Five Colleges, Inc.

"Lorna Peterson (pictured) has for many years been one of the essential driving forces behind the consortia movement in higher education in the United States and abroad," said Lawrence G. Dotolo (pictured), president of the Association for Consortium Leadership (ACL), presenting Dr. Peterson with its lifetime achievement award in October. Given to "an individual who has contributed significantly over the years to support and strengthen cooperation among institutions of higher education and between those institutions and their partners in the community," Peterson received the Pioneer Award at the ACL's annual conference in Alexandria, Virginia.

The executive director of Five Colleges, Inc. -- composed of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith colleges, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst -- Peterson is a frequent speaker and consultant on collaborative arrangement and is special advisor to the board of the ACL.

Under Peterson's 18 years of leadership, the consortium's budget has tripled, the number of multi-campus certificate programs has tripled and the number of joint faculty appointments has nearly doubled. Every year, some 5,000 students take courses on another of the five campuses. Multi-campus performances include PoetryFest, the Five College Student FilmFest and Five College Multicultural Theater's WORD!.

The ACL's Dotolo went on to say, "Lorna's suggestions and her advice on enhancing cooperation are eagerly sought by all involved in the cooperative endeavor. . . . Her visionary approach, her intellectual capacity and her ability to articulate the effort makes her, quite frankly, among the best of all of us in this field. Her retirement will be a huge loss to us and to the consortium endeavor."

The Association for Consortium Leadership is made up of 60 member consortia and focuses solely on higher education. It provides guidance to strengthen cooperation and a forum for professionals to discuss their work.

Based in Amherst, Massachusetts, Five Colleges, Inc., is a nonprofit educational consortium created in 1965 to advance the extensive educational and cultural objectives of its member institutions -- Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith colleges and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
