Physics Chanteuse to Perform at Mount Holyoke College By day, she teaches college-level physics. By night and by turns, she brings physics to the stage in the form of her Cosmic Cabaret, which features pop songs and parodies about the laws of physics. Lynda Williams, known as the Physics Chanteuse, brings her unique act to the Five College area on Friday evening, September 29 when she performs in the Great Room of Blanchard Campus Center at Mount Holyoke College from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. Williams, who lives in Santa Rosa, CA, enjoys a national reputation as a result of performing on stage in the Bay Area and at otherwise "serious" gatherings of scientists, where she often steals the show. Reporting on the centennial meeting of the American Physical Society in April 1999 -- described as the larges gathering of physicists in history -- the Chronicle of Higher Education described Williams' appearance at the convention this way: "Judging by the long lines of people waiting for a seat, the biggest hit of the night was the 'Cosmic Cabaret,' featuring Lynda Williams." Williams, the article went on to say, "has been playing to packed houses at science conferences in between her teaching duties for the past two years." The Physics Chanteuse has also captured headlines in the likes of the LA Times and the New York Times as well as the San Francisco Chronicle and People Magazine. Williams, who performed as a go-go dancer while earning a master's degree in physics and math, writes her own science lyrics. In a recent interview with the New York Times, Williams explains the inspiration for her act this way: "I think I was singing and dancing since the day I was born. I've worked as a dancer and I've taught mixed media production at the San Franciso Art Institute. When I was in graduate school in physics at San Francisco State University, I found myself writing songs about what I was studying . . . At the first scientific conference I went to, I saw a need for entertainment specific to the subjects people were discussing. Something clicked . . . Voila! The Physics Chanteuse was born."
