Five Colleges names Food Bank CFO as its new treasurer

Neal Abraham, executive director of Five Colleges, Inc., has announced the appointment of Barbara Lucey as the new treasurer of the Amherst, Massachusetts-based consortium of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith colleges and the University of Massachusetts.

The unanimous choice of a search committee comprising representatives from each campus, Lucey has since 1997 served as chief financial officer of the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, managing all financial aspects of the nonprofit. With a $10 million annual budget, the Food Bank serves more than 100,000 people each year. Lucey oversaw 12 years of continual growth at the Food Bank, with its revenues increasing 200 percent during her tenure.

“I’m thrilled that we have recruited an experienced nonprofit chief financial officer who will bring her skills to our Five College consortium,” said Abraham. “Barbara is enthusiastic about our mission and excited about the possibilities of strengthening the consortium.”

Lucey’s experience helping create the Food Bank’s strategic plan will benefit Five Colleges, which is in the midst of a comprehensive effort to engage faculty members, administrators, students and trustees in developing a strategic plan that will guide the strengthening of the consortium.

“As the consortium’s liaison to many groups representing areas of finance and administration at the colleges, Barbara will play a central role in our work to develop the next strategic plan,” said Abraham. “She will also be a leader in our efforts as part of that plan to implement improved managerial and administrative services.”

Before her work at the Food Bank, Lucey spent 17 years in the movie industry in California and New York, working first as a staff accountant for Francis Ford Coppola’s Zoetrope Studios and then as an independent consultant for clients ranging from PBS to 20th Century Fox.

A graduate of Tufts University, Lucey’s abilities have been honed by workshops at Harvard University, the Eisenberg School of Management, the Kennedy School of Government and Smith College. She has served on the finance committee for the town of Hatfield, where she resides, and has been a lecturer at New York University.

Lucey, who will begin at Five Colleges in mid-January, replaces Marie Hess, who retired in December after serving for six years as Five College’s treasurer and 30 years at the Fine Arts Center at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Based in Amherst, Massachusetts, Five Colleges, Inc., is a nonprofit educational consortium created in 1965 to advance the extensive educational and cultural objectives of its member institutions—Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith colleges and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
