Showcasing Student Work, Spring 2007
One of the great advantages of living and learning in a Five College community is the opportunity it affords students to get to know peers at the other campuses.
This spring, for example, students will be coming together to present their research and their papers in forums that replicate the professional conferences that their own faculty members regularly attend. Organized on a multi-campus basis, these symposia help students learn from one another and foster the kind of peer networking that’s valuable both in and out of class.
At least four performances scheduled for the spring will enable students from all five campuses to read from their own poetry, to sing in a popular Five College choral festival, to screen their video works, and to hear their original scripts given a staged reading.
What follows is a sampling of just some of the exciting events focusing on student work and performances. Get involved! Come to enjoy!
Student Symposia: By Students, For Students
Anthropology Symposium: April 21, 2007
The 12th annual student symposium will be held Saturday, April 21, 2007, from 9 to 3 p.m. in Kendade 303 and 305 at Mount Holyoke College. More information will soon be posted here.
Ethnomusicology Symposium: April 15, 2007
In the aggregate, the campuses are fortunate to have more than a half dozen scholars who specialize in ethnomusicology, a branch of anthropology that encompasses music as its focus. Each spring, the faculty come together to organize a day-long symposium that enables their students to share their research with each other. Amherst College will take a turn in hosting this special event on Sunday, April 15 in Stirn Auditorium.

Crossroads in the Study of the Americas (CISA) Student Symposium: April 21, 2007
Amherst College will be the site of the 10th annual CISA student symposium on April 21. The day consists of paper sessions being given by seniors, Division III, and graduate students; each panel will be facilitated by a Five College faculty member. An informal workshop will feature second and third year undergraduates presenting their research. A special panel has been organized this year to celebrate the life of Associate Professor of Literature Eric Schocket, formerly of Hampshire College. Professor Shocket, who passed away last year, had been active as a member of CISA's Executive Committee. For further information, contact Becky Miller, Hampshire College, Amherst, MA 01002 or (413) 559-5545.

Five College Choral Festival: February 24, 2007
The biennial Five College Choral Festival comes around this year on February 24 in John M. Greene Hall at Smith College at 7:30 p.m. One of the most popular events on the winter roster, the festival showcases the choirs and choruses of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges, and UMass Amherst, performing singly and then in unison for a rousing finale, this year featuring 900 voices singing an Israeli prayer for peace, arranged for the concert by Dr. Elaine Broad Ginsberg of Hampshire College and Keene State College.

PoetryFest: March 7, 2007
This marks the fifth year of the Five College Student PoetryFest, which is sponsored by the Poetry Center of Smith College, the writing programs of the five colleges, and Five Colleges, Incorporated. Organized by a faculty committee representing the campuses, the PoetryFest celebrates the art of poetry by giving recognition to student poets. Each year, two students from each campus are chosen to read from their works. Several local bookstores -- The Odyssey Bookshop in South Hadley, Broadside Books in Northampton; and Amherst Books, Food for Thought Books, and Jeffery Amherst Bookshop in Amherst -- generously contribute 2 gift certificates to be awarded to the students and Five Colleges compiles the poems into a booklet that is presented to the authors.
UMass Amherst takes a turn this year at hosting the PoetryFest on Wednesday, March 7th, at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall, with a reception immediately following.
The ten students nominated this year by their home campuses to read from their works are:
- Michael Canavan, John Radway (Amherst)
- Christina Clark, eryn alana leavens (Hampshire)
- Anglea Horner, Sara Twombly (Mount Holyoke)
- Sara Brickman, Laurie A. Guerrero (Smith)

Five College Multicultural Theater WORD! Festival: March 13, 2007
A longstanding Five College student event, WORD! continues to serve as a vehicle for presenting original student scripts concerned with issues of race and diversity. The festival, sponsored by the Five College Multicultural Theater Committee, is grounded in a conviction espoused by August Wilson: theater can “raise consciousness.” Works selected are given as staged readings and the playwrights each receive an award of $100 from the James Baldwin Memorial Fund.
In addition to a written critique from professional dramaturg Migdalia Cruz, student playwrights will receive mentoring from members of the Five College Multicultural Theater Committee.
Amherst College takes its turn at hosting WORD! on Tuesday evening, March 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Holden Experimental Theater. Works by six students will be featured in this year’s festival:
- Kimberly Y. Carpenter, Mount Holyoke College, The Burgerheister
- Diane Exavier, Amherst College, On the Hook
- Tanya Karakashian, Hampshire College, One’s Song
- Keli Stewart, University of Massachusetts Amherst, House of Forks and Knives
- Deborah Vernon, Hampshire College, Diner
- Ashley Young, Hampshire College, Untitled
