Research and Student Films Featured in April 2005
Five College
student symposia provide a unique opportunity for students to share their
research with peers at all the campuses. Replicating the format followed
at professional academic gatherings, the four undergraduate symposia taking
place this spring will enable students to have a pre-professional experience
of presenting their research in a public forum featuring either a series
of panels, individual readings, or poster sessions. In some cases, the
student symposium is a longstanding tradition that constitutes a highlight
of the academic year for the students and faculty involved.
Anthropology
Symposium
Budding anthropologists will present their research at a meeting at Hampshire
College on April 9 from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. In addition
to highlighting undergraduate work, the symposium will feature as keynote
speaker Pamela Stone, a Hampshire graduate and currently Assistant Professor
of Biological Anthropology at Western Michigan University.
For further
information, contact Professor
Michelle Bigenho.
Ethnomusicology
Symposium
Students pursuing work in ethnomusicology will have a chance to share
their work in an all-day symposium at Smith College on Sunday, April
10 from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Earle Recital Concert Hall,
Sage Hall; Smith College. Student presenters will take part in a series
of panels throughout the day. The event concludes with a keynote address
entitled "Shoot the Sergeant: Masculinity and Violence in Post-Apartheid
Ngoma Song and Dance" to be given by Louise Meintjes, Associate Professor
of Music and Cultural Anthropology, Duke University. The symposium is
free and open to the public.
More information
about the symposium is available online at the Five
College Ethnomusicology Web site.

well as a video presentation. Work cuts across many disciplines and fields,
