Guthrie Theater Residency

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see The Guthrie Theater in their first national tour in 20 years! As America’s flagship, this regional theater delivers a focused examination of Shakespeare’s deeply psychological drama, Othello (see April 2 and April 3, below). The company will be in residence for an entire week prior to their public performances with outreach activities at each of the five colleges, Smith Vocational School, and local high schools including artistic and technical workshops, and a lecture by Guthrie Theater Artistic Director Joe Dowling.

Illuminating the dynamic, sensual text and themes of Shakespeare’s masterpiece in which powers collide, the Guthrie Theater brings to life a riveting story of passion, manipulation, and betrayal, revealing a complex world in which social order, racial politics, and personal ambitions push the treacherous Iago to destroy Othello and his wife Desdemona.

Forever growing and changing, as has the community that founded it, the Guthrie Theater is a living organization reflecting the culture and human spirit of its audiences today. While the Guthrie Theater's mission and artistic excellence have remained constant, much has changed over the past four decades. What began as a summer season of four productions supported by a minimal staff is now a complex organization employing more than 900 people per year. As the Guthrie enters the Millennium, plans are underway to build a new multistage theater center on the banks of the Mississippi River. The new theater will allow the Guthrie to retain its pre-eminence among theaters nationally and internationally.

Shakespeare in American Communities is a national theater touring initiative sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Sallie Mae Fund in cooperation with Arts Midwest. The Guthrie Theater tour of Othello is sponsored by Target Corporation and Marshall Field’s Gives with additional support from RBC Dain Rauscher and Bankfirst. Additional sponsorship comes from WFCR 88.5FM and The Valley Advocate. Performances and outreach activities by the Guthrie Theater made possible, in part, by the Office of the Chancellor, Office of the Provost, and the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at the University of Massachusetts; and through collaboration with the 5-College Theater Departments, 5-Colleges, Inc., UMass Department of Theater, and the students of Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mt. Holyoke College, Smith College, and the University of Massachusetts.

Events open to the general public:

Bio: An internationally known director, Joe Dowling was originally associated with the Abbey Theatre, Ireland's national theater. In 1978, at age 29 Dowling became the youngest Artistic Director in the Abbey's history, beginning a seven-year term that brought about an artistic and institutional resurgence. After leaving the Abbey in 1985, Dowling was the Managing and Artistic Director of Dublin's oldest commercial theater, the Gaiety, where he founded and directed the Gaiety School of Acting, now widely regarded as Ireland's premier drama school. Since 1990 he has directed extensively in North America, with productions at Arena Stage, Long Wharf Theatre, New York Shakespeare Festival, the Stratford Theatre Festival and The Shakespeare Theater in Washington, D.C. He became the artistic director for the Guthrie Theater in 1995.
