WORD! 2005: A Festival of Political Performance

This year’s Five College WORD! features A FESTIVAL OF POLITICAL PERFORMANCE, including new plays, spoken word, and interdisciplinary performances on the theme of RACE, CULTURE, AND PRIVILEGE. Students whose work is selected to be read will receive an award named for the beloved American writer James Baldwin. WORD! takes place on March 9 in the Great Room of Blanchard Campus Center at Mount Holyoke College beginning at 8:00 p.m., and it is free and open to the public.

The festival, now in its ninth consecutive year, provides a venue for student writing on themes of cultural identity. WORD! originated with the University’s New WORLD Theater under the direction of Roberta Uno. As a Five College event, the festival is hosted by a different campus each year and scripts submitted come from undergraduate and graduate students from all five campuses.

Excerpts from the following plays will be read:

Breath of the Invisible Woman
Ben Kahn, Hampshire College

Black Misery
K.A.T. Calvin, Mount Holyoke College

Little White Lies
Tamara Bullock, Mount Holyoke College

I’m Not Stupid, No I’m not
Phil O’Donoghue, UMass Amherst

The World Beneath
Mike Romanowski, UMass Amherst

Other: a play by and about multiracial Asians
Amy Baker, UMass Amherst

Each winner receives an award of $100. Funds for the awards come in part from a memorial fund established in the name of James Baldwin by members of the Five College community. Before his death in 1987, Baldwin spent several years at the campuses as a Five College Distinguished Joint Faculty Appointee.

WORD! is one of several activities supported by the Five College Multicultural Theater Committee, which was established during the 1980s by the chairs of the theater departments to promote diversity in theater. Those currently serving as members of that committee include:

Peter Lobdell, Theater and Dance, Amherst College
Natalie Sowell, Interdisciplinary Arts, Hampshire College
Julia Whitworth, Theatre Arts, Mount Holyoke College
Ed Check, Theatre, Smith College
Priscilla Page, Theater, UMass Amherst
Andrea Assaf, New WORLD Theater, UMass Amherst
