Five College Multicultural Theater presents WORD! 2008

WORD!, an annual presentation of student-written scripts dealing with issues of race and diversity, will be presented on Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. at UMass Amherst’s Curtain Theater. It is free and open to the public.

The productions, written by Five College students, take on themes reflecting issues of race and diversity using playwright August Wilson's idea that theater can raise consciousness and politicize communities of color. The scripts were chosen by the Multicultural Theater Committee, which then offered artistic and dramaturgical support for students to prepare their work for the stage.

The featured scripts:

Assumptions by Erin Seibert Cowles, Smith College

District 98 by Alia Ahmed, Hampshire College

Rice/Race, a puppet show by Eliza Laytner, Mount Holyoke College and Nikki Calonge

Furious, by Lisa Meyers, Smith College

Mystic Mitch and that Bitch Katrina by Eve Crusto, Mount Holyoke College
