Five College Center for the Study of World Languages Garners Top MERLOT Award LangMedia, a Web based resource for world languages and cultures developed by the Five College Center for the Study of World Languages (CSWL) has been awarded the 2005 Editors’ Choice Award for World Languages from the Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT). The authors of the award-winning project are Elizabeth Mazzocco, director of the Five College Center for the Study of World Languages and Five College Professor of Italian at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Dr. Amy Wordelman, the center’s associate director and technology coordinator. LangMedia currently makes available online and free materials for learning and teaching 37 languages and/or cultures ranging from Italian and French to Croatian and Swahili. The MERLOT Awards Program for Exemplary Online Learning Resources recognizes and promotes online resources that contribute significantly to teaching and learning. It honors their authors and developers by conferring on them the MERLOT Classics and Editors' Choice Awards. Begun in 2002, the program is sponsored, in part, by McGraw-Hill. Each year, each of MERLOT’s several editorial boards selects an outstanding, peer-reviewed program in its discipline to receive an annual MERLOT Classics award. From these winners, the MERLOT Editors' Council names those it deems “exemplary models for all disciplines” and confers on them its highest honor, the MERLOT Editors' Choice Award. MERLOT describes itself as a “continually growing catalog of online learning materials, peer reviews, learning assignments, and user comments. The organization’s stated strategic goal is to “improve the effectiveness of teaching and learning by increasing the quantity and quality of peer reviewed online learning materials that can be easily incorporated into faculty designed courses.” All information is furnished on the Web free of charge. Funding for LangMedia has come from the National Security Education Program (US Dept. of Defense) and the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE, US Dept. of Education).
