Marine Biological Laboratory
Life and Living in Space 2003: A Teacher Enhancement Workshop for High School and Community College Teachers
December 4-6, 2003 Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Massachusetts
Deadline: November 1, 2003. What effects does space flight have on the body? How do plants grow in space? Is there life elsewhere in the universe? What precautions must we take when going to other planets, and when bringing samples back to Earth? A hands-on workshop for high school and community college teachers addressing these and other questions will be held at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. The workshop will provide participants with content knowledge in several areas of active research in astrobiology and the space life sciences, including human physiology in space, agriculture in space, and issues of planetary protection and microbial contamination of spacecraft. In addition to lectures from life science and astrobiology researchers, considerable time will be spent engaged in hands-on activities that use low cost and easily available materials. Participants will also be introduced to available NASA educational resources. Dormitory housing and food will be provided for all participants during the duration of the workshop. Documentation for purposes of awarding PDPs will be given. For more information, contact Diana Jennings, Center for Advanced Studies in the Space Life Sciences, Marine Biological Laboratory,508-289-7535, or visit our website .
