The Capstone Colloquium in African Studies represents an interdisciplinary capstone experience for students concentrating in African studies. Drawing on the resources of faculty in the Five College African Studies Council, we will seek to synthesize and productively utilize the Africa-oriented coursework, study abroad, internships, and research experiences of class participants. We will consider how the generation of knowledge about Africa has shaped academic disciplines, how knowledge about Africa contributes to endeavors focused on economic progress and political and social transformation on the continent and elsewhere, and how the study of Africa is likely to change in coming decades.

I will design the syllabus after I have learned the interests and experiences of the students who have pre-enrolled, but the major question of the course will be how scholarship on Africa contributes to understanding the work that class participants might anticipate doing over the next several decades after their graduation. We will spend two weeks each on questions related to

political structures,

local, national and global economies,

social organization and development

public health and HIV/AIDS

art and aesthetics.
Within each unit, we will spend one week discussing readings and using the works of African film makers to orient us to the topic, and one week listening to, and interacting with a panel which will consist of class participants presenting their own research projects, other class participants discussing the work of Five College faculty (these will be class participants who don’t have senior independent research projects to present), and Five College African studies faculty who will serve as discussants. We will include Five College African studies alums working in these fields in several of the panels.

Grades will be based on
Five 2 page reading responses for the reading-focussed weeks (40%)
Panel presentation (30%)
A final reflection paper (15%)
Class participation. (15%)

This class requires permission: I will admit seniors or juniors whose undergraduate record demonstrates a strong interest in African studies, and will seek to ensure that all 5 colleges are equally represented. (Please note that I will be in Uganda from October 29 to November 8 and will not have reliable email access while there.)
