Research Interests: I am interested in the historical processes which created the conditions which we experience as problems in the present: how did we the human race create the extremes of wealth and poverty and power and powerlessness that characterize the modern world? My current research explores these looking at the transformation of forms of political accountability over two centuries in the city of Kampala, and the social history of economic exchange in East Africa.

Courses include: The History of Global Inequality, Violence and Social Change in Modern Africa, African Popular Culture, African Cities: Development Dreams and Nightmares, Food and Famine in African History, Power and Exchange in the African Past.

Publications: Landed Obligation: The Practice of Power in Buganda Heinemann, 1997.
