Five College Africa Day

Starting at 2:15 pm, enjoy an afternoon and evening of: Performances, food and activities including lively discussion of timely issues!

>> 2:15 - West African Drumming and Dance Performance. Five College West African Music Ensemble, accompanied by dancer Elikem Nyamuame, performing music from Ghana, Togo, and Benin.

>> 3:00 - Five College African Studies Reception. Join faculty, African Scholars Program fellows, students an alums from the Five Colleges for a reception with African snacks. Browse an exhibit of research, study abroad, internships, and activism that links the Five Colleges to Africa.

>> 3:30 - Meaningful and principled connections with Africa: Health, education and economic issues. Two panels with presentations and lively discussion by five college students, faculty and alums including Tracey Hebert (MHC’92). Tracey Hebert (MHC’92) will discuss her post-conflict work in Liberia for the U.S. Agency for International Development, a career inspired by her undergraduate study abroad in Senegal.

>> 4:30 - Swahili skit/Mchezo Mswahili Performance in Swahili by Five College Language Students.

>> 5:00 to 7:00 - Dinner specials - The Blanchard Campus Center is pleased to feature reasonably-priced African-themed dinner specials, look for the signs.

>> 8:00-10:00 - Hip-Hop Band Gokh-Bi System (a.k.a GBS) will lead an evening of activities, music and dance. Sponsored by the Mount Holyoke African and Caribbean Student Association (MHACASA) and the Mount Holyoke Office of Student Programs.

Five College Africa Day is sponsored by Five College African Studies Council, the Five College African Scholars Program, Amherst College Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Amherst Black Studies Department, Smith College African Studies Program, Atopani fund at Hampshire College, MHACASA, Mount Holyoke College African American and African studies, Center for Global Initiatives and Office of Student Programs, and the UMass International Programs Office.

Share your research, study abroad, internship, or activism experience with students and faculty. Help us advertise and organize the next Five College Africa day on November 2nd at Mount Holyoke College. Sign up now and help us put a face on Africa!

Have you studied, lived or grown up in Kenya, Ghana, Senegal, South Africa, Egypt, Uganda, or somewhere else in Africa?

Have you done research or worked on a project related to Africa?

If so, we’d like to hear from you!

Five College African Studies invites students from Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts to share their experiences through creative poster/visual displays or presentations that will help us put a face on Africa. Your contributions will be part of a larger afternoon and evening of events including music, dance, and discussions of Africa related careers.
