The Palmwine Drinkard opera, written by Kola Ogunmola, and based on Amos Tutuola's novel of the same title, is representative of a neo traditional Yoruba genre that has flourished since the early part of the last century. Rooted in Yoruba Folklore, but relying on the apparatuses of modern theatre, the opera enacts the story of Lanke, a "drinkard" (not a drunkard!) who embarks on a journey to bring his dead tapster to life. Lanke's unrealized dream confronts us with issues about the real value of life. Perhaps more importantly however, it reminds us of the power of wine!

The opera will be performed by a cast of 28 students of the Mount Holyoke College, in collaboration with a group of Nigerian professional performers that include a master drummer, a choreographer and a singer. The production, which is being jointly produced by the Departments of Music and Theatre of the Mount Holyoke College, will be directed by Dr. Bode Omojola, Five College Assistant Professor of Music.
