>> 2:00-6:00 enjoy an afternoon of performances, panel discussions, films, photos and an Africa Study abroad and student activities fair in 227 Herter Hall. See below for a more detailed schedule.

>> 6:00 - 8:00 A taste of Africa hosted by the UMass MalcomX Cultural Center located in the Berkshire Dinning Common. The Worcester dinning commons will also feature some menu specials.

>> 8:00 - Sweet Honey in the Rock performs at the UMass Fine Arts Center Purchase tickets to this powerful a cappella ensemble of African-American women. Sweet Honey in the Rock has performed around the world, raising their voices in hope, love, justice, peace, and resistance.

AFTERNOON SCHEDULE in 227 Herter Hall:

>> 2:00 - West African Drumming and African Folktales. Five College West African Music Ensemble, performing music from Ghana, Togo, and Benin. Followed by storyteller Eshu Bumpus.

>> 2:45 - Democracy and Africa-Prospects and Challenges in the 21st century presented by members of the African Graduates’ and Scholars’ Association (AGASA).

>> 3:45 - Exhibits and films. Africa Study abroad and student activities fair. Short films by African directors.

>> 3:45 - Dance performances and storytelling.
Funana Festival Dance by the Cape Verdean Student Alliance (CVSA), Umass African Student Association Coupe Decaler Dance and a performance by the Smith African and Caribbean Student Association.

>> 4:40 - Destination Africa panel discussions. Two panels with presentations and lively discussion by five college students and faculty about research, study abroad, internships, and activism that link the Five Colleges to Africa.

>> 5:30 - Photo contest awards and East African Dance Performance. Five College dance students under the direction of Marilyn Middleton-Sylla accompanied by music from Senegal, Mali, Guinea and Haiti.

Throughout the afternoon:

>> - Africa Study abroad and student activities fair. Browse the table displays and talk with exhibitors.
>> - Destination Africa photo contest. Take a virtual tour of the continent of Africa with pictures from our Africa Day Photo Contest. Event attendees will vote for the winner from the top five photos selected.
>> - African films. Screening of short films by African directors in anticipation of the upcoming national traveling series of African Film Festival (AFF).

Five College Africa Day 2008 is hosted by the African Graduates’ and Scholars’ Association (AGASA), African Student Association (ASA), and the Cape Verdean students Alliance (CVSA). Sponsors also include the Five College African Studies Council and African Scholars Program; the UMass Amherst W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies, MalcomX Cultural Center, CCEBMS program, and International Program Office; Amherst College Anthropology and Black Studies Departments; Smith College African Studies Program and Mount Holyoke College African and African American Studies Department.
