Five College America Reads Program

Five Colleges, Incorporated

America Reads/America Counts Training

Someone said you can't teach anyone anything, only get them excited to learn it for themselves. Your creativity, imagination and experience are the most effective tools you have to communicate the joy and wonder reading can bring to our lives. Good Readers are better able to relate books and stories to their lives; they read fluently and make associations within the text and to the people and objects around them, moving beyond simply sounding out the letters and words.

To help you build good readers, there are three training sessions that Five College America Reads/America Counts Program requires as part of your position.

If you have any special needs regarding accessibility please let us know ahead of time so that we may accomodate you.

Math Tutoring Training

Overview Training

This class lasts two hours and is required before you begin tutoring. You will be paid for your attendance. Training will cover classroom etiquette, your responsibilities as an America Reads/America Counts Tutor, and introduces you to some some tutoring strategies. You may look for a job before completing the overview training, but we encourage you to sign up for training as soon as you're able to attend.
The Extended Training Workshop (ETW)

This is an extensive training workshop offered once per semester. Taught by faculty from the five colleges and area teachers, the ETW equips you as a tutor with detailed tutoring strategies, ideas for projects and lessons, a place to meet and share ideas with other tutors, and an opportunity to ask questions related to the level of students you are tutoring. The training lasts several hours and food is provided. As with the Overview Training, you will be paid for your time.

Special Topic Workshop

You will need to attend one Special Topic Workshop towards the end of the semester. You can choose from among several that will be offered. Each workshop will address a specific topic, either about reading or math instruction, or a more general educational topic. Examples may include Working with English Language Learners, Learning Disabilities, Behavior Management Techniques, Progress Monitoring, or Research in Reading Instruction. Already having tutoring experience under your belt, you will be able to contribute your own observations and ideas, making this a truly dynamic session. Of course, you will be paid for attendance. Please check back later in the semester to check out the workshops that will be offered.

If you have already completed the Extended Training Workshop, we want to invite you back again this semester for an update on how your tutoring is going, and give you an opportunity to share your experiences and knowledge with new tutors. Of course, you will be paid for your time.
