The Five College Committee encourages students to pursue concentrated study of the experiences of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the Americas. Taking courses from the following list will help students learn to appreciate A/P/A cultural and artistic expressions, to understand and critique the racial formation of Asian/Pacific/Americans, and to investigate how international conflicts, global economic systems, and ongoing migration affect A/P/A communities and individuals and their intersections with others. We believe choosing courses at different levels that focus on diverse time-periods while deploying a variety of disciplines and comparative perspectives will help students develop knowledge of the past experiences of Asian/Pacific/Americans, but also a deeper awareness of contemporary material conditions shaping the experience of Asian/Pacific/Americans.
To undertake a coherent study of A/P/A experiences, students might usefully begin with an Introductory course, and then over time participate in at least one or two courses from each of the following categories: Expressions, U.S. Interconnections, and Global Intersections. In addition to the information on this website, students should refer to the Five College Course Catalogue to check course availability.
