From January 2003 to December 2007, the African Scholars Program welcomed 37 scholars from African universities representing 15 African nations. With the generous support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Smith College, the program offered fellowships to African scholars for four-month residencies at one of the five colleges. Women and men throughout Africa, particularly those who had not had recent access to such opportunities, were encouraged to apply. The fellowships allowed the program to develop a rich network of program alumni.
For 2008 the Five College African Scholars Program is focused on activities with program alumni, and pursuing opportunities to host other African scholars in the future.
The Five College African Scholars Program is generously supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Smith College, and Five Colleges, Incorporated and its member institutions.
