Resources for Incoming Fellows Local Information For an overview of Five Colleges, Inc. and its member institutions—Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (UMass)—see the Five College website Amherst weather ASP Fellows are covered by the UMass Post Doctoral Health Insurance Plan, underwritten by the Chickering Group. UMass Health Services acts as the primary care provider for the Health Insurance Plan. Health Services is staffed by board certified physicians and practitioners, and is open 24 hours a day during the academic year. The five colleges are within 12 miles of one another, and linked by a free bus system that operates daily. Some routes make stops in the towns of Amherst, Northampton and South Hadley, and nearby shopping areas. See PVTA/UMass Transit for schedule information. The nearest airport is Bradley International Airport, in Hartford, Connecticut (see website). Bradley is 45 minutes from Amherst (Logan Airport in Boston is two hours away). Valley Transporter offers a shuttle service between the five colleges and Bradley; for schedules and fares see website, or call (800) 872-8752 or (413) 253-1350. Peter Pan bus service has regular service between Amherst and major cities in the northeast; for details see website, or call (800) 237-8747. Train service is available from Amherst, but there is only one train a day at this station. Springfield, Massachusetts (about 40 minutes away) is the closest full service Amtrak station. The five colleges library system has an integrated, on-line joint catalog. University library holdings are in one database, and the holdings of the four colleges in another, but users can switch between databases. The Five College Calendar of Events provides an overview of lectures, exhibits, seminars, and performances on all the campuses. The UMass History Department provides a calendar of events for History faculty and students, including the Five College History Seminar which discusses the work-in-progress of Valley historians. Faculty seminars, lectures and other cultural events are sponsored by the African Studies Council The Five College Women’s Studies Research Center encourages engaged, critical feminist scholarship from diverse perspectives. Each year the Center hosts 15 visting scholars and activists from the United States and abroad.
