Internships "There are a couple things I learned this past year that may be interesting to your students (which you may already know). First, I've spoken with several people from other NGOs [non-governmental organizations] and for the most part the individuals "got their foot in the door" by interning/volunteering for his/her respective organization during his/her undergrad. The woman I met from Partners In Health this past summer started volunteering for PIH in her undergrad, applied for PIH's internship program and then applied for a research position with the organization. For jobs, preference is usually given to individuals with a history with the organization. That is how I was hired at Operation Smile and from what I can tell…it seems fairly universal. And so, it just stresses the importance of starting a career path early during one's undergrad with internships (of course this assumes the student already know her career path during her undergrad). Also, while speaking about internships…The International Rescue Committee has an international internship program where the students receive a stipend from the organization. I find this very amazing considering for the most part…students usually have to pay the organization for his/her internship." -Ashley Barron A great place to begin your internship search is your campus career center, where you can find online resources, books, and counselors to guide you.
