Fernandito Ferrer concert

The Centro de Artes @ El Mercado presents a concert at 8pm on Saturday, March 31, 2007 by Fernandito Ferrer to benefit the Western Massachusetts Social Forum. We will also be saying farewell to our beloved friend Luis Alfonso Melendez, host of the radio program Tertulia for the past 22 years.

Fernandito Ferrer has been a young pioneer among the new breed of singer-songwriters in Puerto Rico. He first appeared on stage in 1997 and has since made himself known throughout the island, the Caribbean, the US and Mexico. Ferrer draws from the Nueva Trova (New Song) giants of the '70s but has also developed a language of his own within his work. His percussive guitar technique and impressive vocal abilities, together with the good use of subtle, yet powerful melody and poetic imagery, put his music in a much wider context. His style is best compared to the works of Tracy Chapman, Ani DiFranco, Silvio Rodriguez & Nick Drake. His music merges his prior influences as a drummer, his love for jazz, and his passion for folk music from around the globe.

Come to dance Hip-Hop, Reggaetón, Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, and Reggae & House. Centro de Artes' mission is to build a community arts campus at El Mercado that offers arts-music-theater education programs and contemporary art exhibitions, providing services and resources for individual artists throughout Holyoke, and beyond. CENA is where the community can create, support, and learn about different artistic disciplines and promises to enhance the South Holyoke neighborhood, assist in the revitalization of Main Street, Holyoke.
