Film Screening: Al Otro Lado

On Wednesday, April 11th at 7:30pm, the Massachusetts Multicultural Film Festival will be screening the recently released film, Al Otro Lado directed by Natalia Almada (2006, 70 mins. Mexico/USA). The screening will be in Room 137, Isenberg School of Management, UMass-Amherst.

The proud Mexican tradition of corrido music captured in the performance of Mexican band Los Tigres del Norte and the late Chalino Sanchez provides both heartbeat and backbone to this rich documentary examination of dreams, drug smuggling and illegal immigration from Sinaloa, Mexico to South Central and East L.A. Further information about the film is available at the PBS POV website about Al Otro Lado.

Natalia Almada will be coming from Mexico to introduce the film at the screening and for Q and A with the audience. There will also be a workshop with the director on Wednesday afternoon before the screening, where she will discuss with participants production issues related to the filming, her efforts to convey the point of view of immigrants, and her work in progress. People interested in attending the workshop should contact Jacqueline Urla, curator of the Massachusetts Multicultural Film Festival, at jurla@anthro.umass.edu, or the Film Studies program at film@hfa.umass.edu as soon as possible.
