| The Caribbean | | Course Number | BLST 61-01 | | Course Title | The Caribbean | | Department | Black Studies | | Campus | Amherst College | | Course Description | (Offered as History 52 [LA] and Black Studies 61 [CLA].) A survey of the history of Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Puerto Rico from the fifteenth century to the present. Topics include conquest and settlement, independence and colonialism, North American intervention, twentieth-century dictators, and political and social revolution. Comparisons will be drawn among the islands and between the Caribbean zone as a whole and continental Latin America. Three class meetings per week. Not open to first-year students. Fall semester. Visiting Professor Rausch (University of Massachusetts). |
