Course DescriptionThis course will address issues in literacy and literacy education among special populations, specifically culturally and linguistically diverse learners. We will closely examine the multiple contexts for literacy education including school, home, and community. Special topics include: A sociocultural theory of literacy and literacy education; role of language in literacy education; role of culture in literacy and learning; literacy instruction in multilingual/multicultural classroom contexts; language, culture and the politics of schooling; and critical literacy in school and community. This course has a field component. Enrollment limited to 35.
