| Introduction to Probability and Statistics | | Course Number | MTH 245-01-LEC | | Course Title | Introduction to Probability and Statistics | | Department | Mathematics | | Campus | Smith College | | Course Description | An application-oriented introduction to statistical inference: descriptive statistics; random variables; binomial and normal probability distributions; sampling distributions; point and interval estimates; standard parametric and nonparametric hypothesis tests; type I and type II test errors; correlation; and regression. A wide variety of applications from the sciences and social sciences will be used. Classes meet for lecture/discussion and for a required laboratory. Laboratories emphasize computer analysis of real data and a laboratory section is offered for Biological Sciences majors. Students will not be given credit for both MTH 241 and MTH 245 or MTH 190. MTH 245 also satisfies the basis requirement for Psychology. Prerequisite: MTH 111, or MTH 153, or one year of high school calculus, or permission of the instructor. Lab sections limited to 24. |
