Sem: Flowers from the Volcano

| Sem: Flowers from the Volcano | | Course Number | SPAN 330-02 | | Course Title | Sem: Flowers from the Volcano | | Department | Spanish | | Campus | Mount Holyoke College | | Course Description | 'Flowers from the Volcano,' an iconic poem by Salvadoran-Nicaraguan writer Claribel Alegra, serves as a point of departure in this course as we examine indigenous myths, memory, and revolutionary movements and civil conflict in Central American texts from Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and US-Central American Latinos. The writings of Alegra, Dalton, Belli, Rigby, Ramrez, Cardenal, Duncan, Asturias, and Payeras question history and express ethnic, cultural, and national identities. We will focus on movements such as the Sandinista Revolution; civil wars in El Salvador and Guatemala; migration; and indigenous, black, and feminist movements in the region.' |
