Peter Jones is a composer, multi-instrumentalist and improviser with a wide stylistic range. He has been an active musician in the dance field for the past twenty years. He has performed with many leading dance improvisers including Andrew Harwood, David Dorfman, Chris Aiken and Kirstie Simson. He has created numerous scores for choreographers including "Viscous Beauties" for Kevin Wynn, "21st Century Stride" for Danny Buraczeski's Jazzdance and "The Metal Garden" for Sean Curran. All of these pieces premiered at the Joyce Theater in New York City. He also works as pianist/arranger with the singer Philip Hamilton and collaborates frequently with percussionist Tigger Benford. He has released six CDs of music on his own recording label Joneschord music. New releases include "Skeletons" for solo piano and "Gradual Motion II". He is currently working on a new recording project entitled "Sketches and Fragments".
He has held the position of musical director for the dance program at Mount Holyoke College for the past fifteen years. He has been a guest lecturer at many universities and dance festivals across the country. At Mt Holyoke he teaches two courses on music for dance and frequently leads students in independent studies in a wide range of musical topics including the blues, ethnomusicology, percussion and composition.
