oThe City of Holyoke is a narrative account of the history of Holyoke from early settlement to the mid-industrial period of the 1860’s adapted from New England Magazine 1898.

oPicturesque Hampden is a 1892 publication from the Picturesque Publishing Co. of Northampton, MA that gives a lengthy history of Holyoke from early settlement to the industrial period, with a central focus on how Holyoke developed as a “the paper city.”

•1800-1950: Industrialism, Immigration and Holyoke
oHolyoke Massachusetts: A Case History of the Industrial Revolution in America by Constance McLaughlin Green, Instructor in History at Smith College, published by Yale University Press in 1939. This book won the George Washington Egleston Prize for its contribution to American history, and is a well written, intimate account of Holyoke’s development as an industrial mill city in the 1800’s.
