Spring 2010

The Five Colleges Tutor Mentor Training Series:

This series is sponsored by the Five Colleges Community Based Learning Committee. This is a pilot series being conducted due to opinions voiced by college students, faculty, staff, and community partners that students are in need of more tutor-mentor training.

Hundreds of Five Colleges students enter into in-school and after-school programs in Holyoke, Springfield, and surrounding communities. An incredible number of students provide tutoring and mentoring through work study, for-credit positions, and volunteering through a campus service-learning/volunteer office. But sheer numbers will not make all the difference- teachers and program directors working with the youth notice the amazing differences you are making, but also note the increased affects you could have if you were trained in tutoring math techniques, reading skills, what the students needed to know to pass Massachusetts State Tests, best practices for doing homework, and especially how to make your 1-hour tutoring session productive using games and activities that you and the student you're working with will really enjoy.

The trainers provided for each of these trainings are inspiring, excited, and passionate public school teachers and specialists in Math, Reading, and some in youth development at after-school programs. Please read about their work experiences below. They are passionate about working with you all to help educate their students in the best possible ways. In addition to the 1.5 hour trainings, we hope to give everyone packets of games, activities, and tips to use with your students when you get stuck or need structure to your time. This is all a work in progress and we look forward to any and all suggestions that you may have. Please be in-touch with your feedback!

UPDATE: Tutor Training "TOOL KITS" will be provided for registered attendants of the trainings. Firstly, the tool kits will have endless materials for tutoring Math and tutoring English, Reading, and Writing for K-8. The materials are being assembled with assistance of public school teachers and will help you with What you NEED to Know . When working with a student and you cannot remember how to multiply fractions, add decimals, solve world problems, or need some strategies for sounding out words and practicing reading comprehension, just refer to your tutor tool kit for materials. These will also include tutoring materials such as pencils, crayons, paper, stickers, and more.
