Course Management Systems

The institutions use different systems for managing course websites, so I have included information about each here. Here's a rundown of who's using what.

Amherst uses Blackboard and has a special information page for faculty about using Blackboard on the Amherst IT site. The person at Academic Technology Services who deals specifically with Blackboard is Paul Chapin. He can be reached at 542-2144 if you have questions.

In addition, there is also a content management system (CMS) built into the Amherst's Web site, which you are also free to use. If you would like to supplement or replace your Blackboard page with one on Amherst's own content management system (CMS), please see this page on the Amherst IT website. The person to contact for more info about the CMS is Scott Payne at 542-8396.

As of Fall 2011, Hampshire has begun to use Moodle as their course management system. They have created a Using Moodle for Faculty page with information about how it works. More information can be found on the main page for Hampshire Course Websites. The main page also has links to all course websites for each school.

Mount Holyoke uses a system called ella (short for electronic learning arena). General information about ella is available here, and there is also a page for general resources for faculty. The LITS liaison list (by department) is here.

Smith also uses Moodle. More on using Moodle here (Smith Educational Technology Services info) and here (Moodle documentation for teachers). This page also offers a Moodle overview. For Moodle assistance, you can call the User Support Center at 585-4487 or email them at
4its AT email.smith.edu.

The University, uses a system called SPARK A help page for faculty is available here. A transition has already begun to Moodle at the University as well. For further help, contact the Instructional Media Lab at 413-545-2823 or instruct AT oit.umass.edu
