In May 1973, the Five College Librarians Council approved, on a one-year experimental basis, a proposal for open access to Five College libraries for students, faculty and staff of the Five Colleges Consortium. At the end of the 1973-74 academic year, the program received a favorable evaluation and was continued indefinitely.
The Five College Circulation Committee, with one or two representatives from each institution, meets as a group at least once a semester. Our original charge was to make the direct borrowing policy work effectively and equitably amongst the Five College libraries. Since 1973 we have standardized loan rules, loan periods and billing policies. We have implemented two online library systems and are about to implement a third. Utilizing the online systems, we have implemented patron self-renewal, the ability for patrons to view their own circulation record, and the 'Patron Request Item' function for books. Through cooperation we work to make our collections more accessible and our policies and procedures more transparent to all the patrons of the Five Colleges.
