DEDCC 02/23/07 meeting at Five Colleges, Inc. - notes

Present: J. Ewing, M. Billings, C. Loring, L. Button, J. Jourdain

1. C. Loring provided an update from the FCLC on the future of
DEDCC. There will be no change in the group's charge although there is
ongoing discussion of changes in the membership. That discussion will
continue at the FCLC's next meeting, March 16. HC has decided that since
it has such a small pool of potential members, all of whom are involved
in other Five Colleges committees, there will not be an HC member on
DEDCC for the foreseeable future. AC has also decided to make a change
in its membership in the group, with Rebecca Henning replacing Jan
Jourdain at the next DEDCC meeting.

2. There was general discussion of if/how DEDCC might coordinate
with the new AMC regarding ALEPH issues. No conclusion was reached on
this topic, but it did lead to a more general discussion of how the
current committee structure works and how it might be improved. There
seemed to be consensus that the committees need to be more flexible and
move toward cross-functional work, adopting some of the work patterns of
task-forces rather than just functional focus. The group agreed on the
importance of active participation in Five College committee work as a
professional responsibility, another aspect of which is to stay abreast
of trends in the profession.

3. Because not everyone was available at the meeting, the group
agreed to schedule its next meeting(s) via email.

4. M. Billings will disable the poorly functioning DEDCC listserv.
Members should use dedcc@ella.mtholyoke.edu instead.

5. We had a very brief discussion about possibly hosting a "show
and tell" type session during the summer to update everyone on what's
happening on different campuses re: digital asset management. Likewise,
the group expressed interest in also hosting a cluster of short overview
sessions on web 2.0/library 2.0 topics, metadata, etc., similar to the
"new technologies" presentations a couple of years ago.

6. The group agreed that Five Colleges should move forward with
catalog enrichment. J. Ewing will draft a recommendation to FCLC about
how to proceed with it.
