DEDCC meeting minutes for Friday, May 18, 2007

Attendees: Janet Ewing (chair), Sika Berger, Marilyn Billings, Rebecca Henning, Chris Loring, Mary Stettner

1. Agenda review
• Minutes-taker – Mary’s turn

2. DEDCC housekeeping
• Next meeting – Thursday May 31, 9:30-11 at Smith
3. Catalog enrichment investigation
• Syndetics discussion – Overall impression of the initial Syndetics quote is that it’s low enough to be an attractive catalog enrichment option especially if we’re looking to do something quickly and/or for the short term. Further breakdown of discussion:
o Pros: They do the implementation work, if it’s a year to year thing and we decide to move on we won’t have wasted a lot of staff time. Also, it’s a pretty solid product that lots of libraries are using.
o Cons: We don’t own the data and it’s not searchable. Lingering questions: Will it work with ALEPH? Syndetics rep says yes and they’ll make it work for you. Also, Ex Libris is one of Syndetics’ partners. Some local work is probably necessary for web presence – need to work with AMC and determine what information Syndetics needs from our catalog. Still some questions about how the quote was generated. Does Syndetics charge for entire collection or only items for which they can provide additional information (in which case should the quote be lower)? Also, for duplicate titles in our consortial catalog, do we pay for each instance of a title or just for each unique title? We might like a year contract period, but what contract periods do they actually offer? What happens our relationship with them ceases? How does extraction work?
o To do: Sort through Syndetics features and come up with list of recommendations (e.g., first chapters probably more than we need but author blurbs might be nice) to submit to FCLC by June. May also want to discuss feature selection with RIO.
• Blackwell TOC/Backstage – Overall impression: Purchasing TOCs from Blackwell and adding them to the catalog may take more time and effort, but we’d own the data and it would be searchable. Also attractive is the potential for getting TOCs for older titles for which we don’t already have them. It may be worth pursuing backfile as a separate thing and may influence whether or not buy TOC info from Syndetics. More details:
o Blackwell works with Backstage, send out records on a monthly basis to get TOC. Cost: .05 per record, .10 for consortia.
o Purchasing options: Blackwell/BackStage only have data back to 1991, but if want to do a retrospective purchase back to 1991 this is an option. Buying TOCs from present forward is another option.
o Questions: How much do our monographic records mesh with their data? What’s the overlap with TOC info we get from LC? Cost is the same whether purchase enhanced or basic 505s, but how much work is involved in the enhanced info? Also, LC and WorldCat are doing enhancing as well – duplication of work?
• non-commercial options – Overall impression: for now we’re deciding that SFX linking out to Amazon or any other home-grown option should go on the back burner because it’s not probable that any of these could be implemented by September. More details:
o Amazon connections – there appear to be many ways of doing these, the easiest being to link out to Amazon. None of the information is searchable, however. Janet is going to continue to investigate this for informational purposes.
o SFX linking – apparently there are still larger ALEPH and SFX issues being worked out concerning having ALEPH being an SFX “source” at all.
4. Check in on other projects/events
• debrief from digital assets brown bag
o Marilyn has written up some rough notes. They are in ella, but she will also be sending those around for additions. Will put a final version on the brown bag web page.
• consider larger program for Fall -- Larger, half-day program, need to start planning soon.
 Topic ideas:
• WorldCAT local
• Lib2.0 apps overview
• Lib2.0 innovations – how to decide which innovations make sense
• new methods of scholarly communication (intersection with libraries – what they mean for collecting, access vs. ownership, etc.)
• embedded librarian (overlap with lib2.0, embedded library concepts)
• designing usability interfaces
• next gen library catalogs – Primo, Encore
• using tech with instruction (Captivate, learning objects, incorporating tagging in subject pages, etc.)
• library blogging (Smith has two up and running – records management and science reference)
• Format – Leaning toward less formal, unconference format, though noted that there needs to be a lot of interest and enthusiasm to make an unconference work. If were to go with more formal format, we might be able to get speakers from area libraries who have implemented innovations. Agreed that we need to find out what people are interested in talking about, possibly by means of an online survey.
• Timing – Mid October to early November, though not too close to the 14th.
5. Wrap up
• action items:
o Syndetics questions/clarifications – conference call with rep proposed. Janet will pull together list of questions. Participants in conference call tba.
o BackStage questions about workflow and any particular concerns about Syndetics, etc. – Rebecca conferring with AMC and catalogers.
o SFX and Aleph – Marilyn talking to Michael and AMC about this.
o Survey to gauge topic interest for fall program – Mary looking into doing this using Survey Monkey or Formsite.
