DEDCC Minutes
June 29, 2007

Attendees: Marilyn Billings, Janet Ewing, Rebecca Henning, Chris Loring, Anne C. Moore, Mary Stettner

1. Housekeeping
„X Chairmanship: up for consideration on July 1; Janet has served 2 years, but is willing to extend; normally chairs rotate every 2 years as the committee benefits from a change in leadership; topic was referred to FCLC through Chris as a workload balance among chairs across the 5 colleges should be weighted; the topic will appear on DEDCC agenda for the July meeting
„X Next meeting: July 27 at 9 a.m. at the 5 colleges; at this time we do not need to schedule a second meeting in July
„X August meeting: tentatively set for August 30th at 3 p.m. pending Sika¡¦s availability

2. Bowker Syndetics Catalog Enhancement
Gai Carpenter negotiated a fee of ,000 for all 5 colleges to pay ExLibris to turn on Syndetics. Chris will communicate with DEDCC after the FCLC meeting on June 30th as to whether or not we will proceed with the purchase. If we receive the go-ahead, Anne will complete the order form and submit it to Marie Hess for faxing to Bowker. 3 items must be decided before we can submit the order form:
1. Do we want the pop-up with both view and print or the new window option? The request for a decision has been submitted to Bonnie Vigeland and is on the agenda for the July 9th RIO meeting. We can experiment with both options while Syndetics is running on the test server since the difference is unclear. Bowker says it is easy to switch back and forth.
2. We need to set a realistic contract start date, so that Syndetics is turned on when AMC wants to begin experimenting and that it isn¡¦t active, but unused for an extended period. As this is a one-year contract, each day Syndetics is not used on the front end is lost from the back end. DEDCC recommended a start date of July 16 and Jan gave approval during the meeting.
3. RIO and AMC might sit down together to discuss the implementation timeline given the large number of tasks on their plates. AMC is satisfied with the amount of technical information they have received and are confident of their ability to implement the service. We do not need to send anyone to AMC¡¦s meeting this week. Bowker is eager to assist with the first implementation of Syndetics on an Aleph Version 18 catalog.

One or more DEDCC members might attend the RIO meeting on July 9th to respond to questions and demonstrate our eagerness to assist them with the customization of the interface. Janet was the only one available and will volunteer to Bonnie Vigeland.

3. Fall Conference
The preferred week for the program is October 29 ¡V November 2, so we are looking at early November. The format will be a half-day, more likely in the afternoon. The overwhelming winner for our topic is next-generation catalogs. WorldCat Local (the second favorite topic) can be folded into the presentations. Bowker just purchased Aquabrowser from medialab. Anne had a demonstration of the frontend on the Oklahoma State catalog (http://okstate.medialab.nl) and on that of Carroll County Public Library (http://carr.medialab.nl) at ALA and was impressed although it does not include Web 2.0 community involvement features at this time. We might include this product. Next-gen catalogs we think should be covered include: Endeca, OCLC WorldCat Local, and Primo. Possible formats that were mentioned: 1) An introduction or overview followed by 2-4 presentations, a Q&A period with the full panel, and a survey of audience reaction; 2) A single presenter followed by presentations about the different catalog options worked up by 5 college librarians. Our preference is to have experts from libraries that are using the catalogs present to get up-to-date and experiential information.

DEDCC will conduct an environmental scan to find out what libraries have implemented these catalogs. Vanderbilt and Minnesota were mentioned as Primo libraries. Concern was expressed that OCLC is more focused on the merger with RLG at the moment than with WorldCat Local. The demonstration at ALA covered what U Washington has implemented themselves. Everyone will participate in the environmental scan looking for specific names and gathering information, but the lead researcher for each catalog will be:

Aquabrowser Anne
Endeca Marilyn (will contact Andrew Pace)
Primo Rebecca
WorldCat Local Mary
Overview and Floaters Janet, Sika

Would the program be open to the region or just 5 colleges? We might be more likely to attract excellent speakers for a regional program. We might charge to help defray the expenses. We might be able to charge legally, but it would be a challenge to manage. We would also need to take R.S.V.P.¡¦s. We deferred the decision about charging to a later date. We might share sponsorship with ACRL New England or another regional organization. Chris will take our proposal to host a regional program on Next Generation Catalogs at an estimated cost of ,000 forward to FCLC for consideration.

To be addressed later: What would we ask on the survey?

Janet will coordinate the scheduling of the August meeting.

Next meeting: July 27, 9-10:30 a.m., 5 colleges

Respectfully submitted,
Anne C. Moore
