8/6/02 2:00PM meeting at Five Colleges
Present: J. Schafer, M. Hanley, S. Berger, S.W. Brown, C. Loring , J. Jourdain
1. We accepted the notes from the last meeting.
2. We set a tentative schedule for fall semester meetings, pending Raven's acceptance. (Please see schedule below.)
3. We discussed the function of these meeting notes and agreed that they may be supplemented by other documents (internal working papers, etc.) as needed to maintain the complete archives of our activities. The finalized meeting notes will serve as the public record of our activities.
4. Jan gave an update on the TDNet project, which seems to be progressing on schedule. RIO has made their recommendations regarding the interface, several of which have already been implemented; their other recommendations are in the works. The TDNet Task Force is encouraged by TDNet's latest reply that "it's a matter of when, not if, some of [our] requests will be implemented." All the libraries are in the process of submitting individual title corrections to the database and are hopeful that they'll be made soon.
5. Marilyn gave an update on the Five Colleges website: redesign is in progress and will be ready for review soon.
6. We began discussing items on our "ideas list."
A. Remote/live reference - This is really RIO's project, but we're very interested in the outcome of the ongoing trials at SC and UM, particularly any information they may yield about the potential for Five College collaboration in the future.
B. E-reserves, course management, copyright - This is an important area that doesn't really have any Five College-level oversight at present. There are great opportunities for consortial-level workshops on what we're all doing in these areas right now and what we might want to do in the future collaboratively. Is this an area for Circ/Access Services, and perhaps RIO, to be involved?
C. Administration/management of e-resources, e.g. VERA - This is a back office function and further investigation of options is justified. As the group with the most to gain immediately by use of a better management tool, should SerAcq take the lead on pursuing available options?
D. Searching subject webpages across all Five Colleges, using e.g.
Google - We need to investigate this thoroughly. How could it possibly work? Is this something that can be implemented on each campus locally/at Five Colleges level easily and quickly? How could we standardize implementation?
E. Five College dynamic web pages of master resource lists by subject -
We tabled this indefinitely pending implementation of other ideas and while we consider what resources and requirements may be involved in implementing something like this.
