Meeting Notes

10/11/02 meeting at MHC Library
Present: S. Willen Brown, S. Berger, R. Fonfa, M. Hanley, J. Jourdain

• Jan updated the group on the status of TDNet. The October 2 meeting with David Fritsch was very helpful and informative. The group agreed to forward the Implementation Status Report to FCLC for their approval/action.
• Marilyn updated the group on the library committee webpages at fivecolleges.edu. FCLC wants to know who will keep the data current, but we concluded that since the membership data typically changes only annually, maintenance by Five Colleges personnel should not be a big deal. We'll continue to monitor development of the new Five Colleges site and how we might use it to advantage for posting useful information.
• Sika updated the group on her research into possible use of Google for cross-library-site searching. Right now she's calculating the number of total pages that might be involved in such a project, so needs information from all the member libraries. (Those interested in how Google really works may want to review http://www.searchenginewatch.com/searchday/02/sd0812-googletech.html.)
• We brainstormed how we might educate other Five College librarians on federated searching and open linking. RIO has expressed an interest in collaborating with us on some educational effort so we'll pursue the possibilities. For the present, we'll continue to research what other libraries, particularly those with III and/or TDNet, are using federated searching and/or open linking.
• Updates:
• VERA – Ongoing interest in/need for technology to monitor electronic resource licenses needs to be conveyed to the ILS search committee being appointed soon.
• Remote Reference – This is a RIO responsibility; Raven will query RIO about plans for future meetings to update the Five College librarians about the tests now underway.
• Electronic Reserves – This is a Circ Committee responsibility; Sika will query Circ about their plans.
Related to the discussion of E-reserves: We may also consider topics related to course management such as facilitating linking to the libraries' online resources; information literacy and library instruction initiatives; communication and collaboration between libraries, computing staff, and faculty; chat reference and copyright management features. We may also see if sponsoring/cosponsoring a NERCOMP SIG in the spring is a good way to involve other interested Five College constituents (i.e. not just librarians) in discussions of some topics.
