10/28/02 meeting at Five Colleges
Present: R. Fonfa, M. Hanley, C. Loring, S. Willen Brown, J. Schafer, J. Jourdain
• Jay led a quarterly review of our activities: we need to remember to periodically solicit ideas of what we should be investigating from our colleagues (probably will talk about more ideas in Feb/Mar '03); Chris gave an update on the ILS search status.
• Stephanie reported that responsibility for TDNet has been passed along to Ser/Acq, effective 11/01/02. We discussed using this project as a model for the way the various Five College committees might work together in the future.
• Marilyn reported that she had been contacted by a rep from Net Snippets and asked that we all take a look at it before our next meeting.
• We discussed our "9" ideas, starting off with some updates on who's working with what:
o Jan – no TDNet customers currently using either open linking (OL) or federated searching (FS) technologies; TDNet would love to work with someone on both/either so we should contact them when we're ready to start.
o Marilyn – looking at the ExLibris customer list (http://www.exlibris-usa.com/customers.asp), it appears there are several US academic consortia using/implementing SFX and/or MetaLib; the Endeavor LinkFinderPlus (http://www.endinfosys.com/prods/lfp_custlist.htm ) and EnCompass (http://encompass.endinfosys.com/enc_custlist/enccustlist.htm) customer lists don't include any sites that are consortia, although the rep said there is one in Maryland using both. There is some evidence that Endeavor is integrating with Blackboard and talking about WebCT integration.
o Raven – distributed a list of local libraries using either SFX or LinkFinderPlus as well as a list of III libraries using either.
o Stephanie – distributed an annotated bibliography of articles discussing implementation of either OL or FS.
• We agreed that we all need a lot more information about both OL and FS, agreeing that it's a matter of "when, not if" we need to adopt both technologies. The first step is to help educate our colleagues on both. With the assistance of RIO we're going to plan a January '03 half day open meeting (library as well as other interested staff at each campus) to help inform our colleagues of issues and technologies involved with both OL and FS. (FS will likely be a topic at a later meeting – March '03? – as it's probably not possible to adequately explore both in a single meeting.) For now, we're looking at possibly three speakers during a half day in January: 1 to give a theoretical overview of OL, 2 to talk about their local implementations.
Action Items - Old/Ongoing
