11/11/02 meeting at Five Colleges

Present: C. Loring, J. Schafer, S. Willen Brown, S. Berger, R. Fonfa, J. Jourdain

1. We scheduled an additional meeting: Mon, Dec 16, 2PM @ Smith (Library electronic classroom)

2. We discussed plans for two education sessions in January 2003 for Five College librarians, one on federated searching and the other on open linking. We acknowledged that our adoption of the technologies is not a matter of if, but when, we'll adopt them.

Our original idea had been to have one session in January and the second in March, but we agreed that the topics are so tightly interconnected that it's more logical to have the sessions closer together. We agreed that a subcommittee of two DEDCC people and two RIO members should set up the sessions. Raven and Sika volunteered to be the DEDCC members on the subcommittee; Raven will ask RIO for two volunteers. To get the subcommittee started, we came up with tentative dates (Jan 7 or 8 and Jan 22 or 23) and will investigate holding the events at MHC and SC. We talked about possible speakers and drew up a tentative list to start contacting, although the subcommittee will make the actual arrangements. Chris said that FCLC could probably fund the events (refreshments and speaker expenses). We agreed that some overview materials for people to review prior to the sessions would be helpful. We agreed that feedback from librarians attending each of the two sessions would best be channeled through the various Five College library functional committees to DEDCC in order to collect information on how either of the technologies would affect them and their constituents. DEDCC would compile the information and make a recommendation to FCLC based on the feedback and other considerations.

We'll tentatively get some ballpark pricing on both federated searching and open linking so we have a clearer picture of our possible options when we start talking about more details.

3. The Serials & Acquisitions committee is planning to investigate the possibilities of using Vera for (staff only) management of electronic resource licenses. Ser/Acq is meeting Dec 4, so there will be more information for the group following the Ser/Acq meeting.
