1/29/03 meeting at Five Colleges, Inc.
Present: R. Fonfa, S. Berger, S. Willen Brown, C. Loring, J. Schafer, J. Jourdain
• Raven and Sika reviewed the January meetings on open-linking and federated searching; both meetings were well-attended and positively received. We got lots of good feedback which Marilyn is compiling. We'll have a more in-depth review of the feedback at an upcoming meeting. Meanwhile, we should all ask our colleagues what other subjects they'd like to see covered in similar educational meetings.
• We discussed what the next step should be regarding open-linking in particular. Since the various libraries are waiting to hear if there is financial support for what we'd like to do over the next couple of years regarding open-linking, federated searching, and a new ILS, Chris will ask the FCLC if it is appropriate at this time for DEDCC to pursue contacting various vendors to get demos of there open-linking products.
• We discussed some of the items on our "ideas" list. "Onion Patch," a website which watches for innovations and experiments with "third generation OPACs" is currently on hold, but is worth checking every few months. Also, Bibliomine, a Syracuse U project with which Bruce Croft of UMass CompSci is involved is worth watching. We talked about better ways to exploit software we already own from III, particularly embedding links in electronic overdue notices and those related to "My Millennium." Linda Matson is going to give DEDCC and RIO a presentation on "MM" at our Feb 10 meeting (note change in location and time).
